Making a will
We take time to understand your family and your property, explain your options and prepare a will that clearly reflects your wishes. We also make sure it is signed and witnessed correctly so that it is valid.
When there is no will
If a person dies without a will, their estate is distributed according to the rules of intestacy, and a family member usually needs to apply for letters of administration. We explain who is entitled to apply and to benefit, and handle the application for you.
Beneficiaries living overseas
Many estates involve family members abroad. We can work with executors and beneficiaries remotely, keeping everyone informed while the estate is administered in Jamaica.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if someone dies without a will in Jamaica?
Their estate is distributed under the rules of intestacy, and an eligible family member generally applies to the Supreme Court for letters of administration. We can advise who is entitled to apply and how the estate will be shared.
What is the difference between probate and letters of administration?
Probate is granted to the executor named in a valid will. Letters of administration are granted when there is no will, or when no executor is able to act. Both give the legal authority to deal with the estate.
How long does probate take?
It depends on the size and complexity of the estate, whether the paperwork is complete and the court’s processing times. We give you a realistic estimate once we have reviewed the documents.
Can I handle an estate in Jamaica from overseas?
Yes. We regularly act for executors and beneficiaries living abroad and can manage most steps remotely.
